Ethandun Metal Gifts

Metalwork inspired by the Anglo Saxon period made by self-taught Blacksmith Peter Hailstone at Station Yard, Edington - less than half a mile away from the battle site where Alfred's army defeated Guthrum's men at the Battle of Ethandun in 878 AD.

The pieces which are largely bare steel with just a little decoration are both attractive and practical for the home, combining old and modern techniques to produce designs evocative of the Anglo Saxon era. Each item, or set, features a replica Alfred penny to celebrate the significance of his achievement here in Ethandun.

The Double Coat Hook

Having two hooks is not just a practical bonus it also forms a natural part of the symmetrical design of the piece. The hooks are set low enough so that the geometric design is still visible when garments are hung in place.

The design uses a circle with the inclusion of inverted quarter arcs, a popular design scheme of this period. The colours of Blue and Gold were chosen for decoration as they sit so well together in the famous Alfred Jewel found in Somerset. Upon the blue central disc is mounted a replica Alfred penny.

The bare steel has been finished with a Beeswax polish to protect it from surface rust.

Double Coat Hook - £42.
